Going Nativist: How Nativism and Economic Ideology Interact to Shape Beliefs about Global Trade

Abstract Existing research explains variation in trade attitudes by pitting explanations rooted the foreign part of economic policy, like nativism, against beliefs a commitment to free market principles. But what happens when these factors create significant cross-pressures—how do market-oriented nativists think about trade? We argue that nativism is higher-order belief constrains relationship between lower-order and international trade. test our argument using representative samples from United States Kingdom. First, we analyze observational data find interaction whereby moderates provides national global benefits. Second, report results survey experiment show message long-term benefits increases support for both samples. Importantly, also nativist values weaken treatment effect US sample. As long as relations scholars focus on cultural or antecedents their own, miss much how elements systems interact.
